"Le Tour du monde des Concepts" (Going around the world of concepts) edited by Pierre Legendre

Pierre Legendre is Emeritus Professor of Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne (Faculty of Law)  and honorary Research Director of École Pratique des Hautes Études (Department of Religious Studies). Having a very fine knowledge of the foundations of western societies, he studied various domains, such as the basis of power, the concept of religion, the genealogy of societies, the construction of State and law, the aesthetic layer of cultures, always considering the discovery of the unconscious by Freud as a benefit of modern knowlegde. he gathered these elements into a new research field: dogmatic anthropology. he is considered a major thinker of our time.

he directed the publication of the book Tour du monde des Concepts (’going around the world of concepts), which was recently publisehd by fayard in the collection "Poids et Mesures du Monde". The book gathers contributions by 11 authors, of which 4 are former Fellows of the Institute. Authors are : Pierre Legendre, Jean-Noël Robert, Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi, Danouta Liberski-Bagnoud, Kristofer Schipper, Augustin Emane, Annie Montaut, Osamu Nishitani, Rémi Camus, Orkhan Mir-Kasimov and Suresh Sharma.

Abstract of the book (in French)

La mondialisation n’est pas qu’échange de marchandises et flux financiers. Elle se double d’un envers invisible, difficile à appréhender. Il s’agit de l’impératif de l’interlocution humaine : comprendre et se faire comprendre. Le fait que les notions occidentales se soient répandues sur la planète ne comporte pas l’effet mécanique d’une signification homogène. Partant du constat de la domination linguistique de l’Occident dans le monde contemporain, principalement par le véhicule de l’anglais, ce livre procède à un sondage en profondeur à l’occasion de neuf mots-concepts, patiemment façonnés en Europe durant des siècles. Il expose comment ces concepts sont entendus dans 9 langues non occidentales. Les savants auteurs sollicités mettent sous les yeux du lecteur la complexité de la question de l’interlocution mondiale. Ils nous font toucher du doigt les problèmes fondamentaux, que la doxa euro-américaine refoule, auxquels est confrontée l’humanité contrainte de passer sous bulldozer de la mondialisation. La haute érudition se révèle être un instrument essentiel pour l’analyse des rapports mondiaux.

Supervised by the Nantes Institute for Advanced Study, this collection is openned to authors from any continent, provided they consider the diversity of systems of thoughts, not as irrationality inherited from the past in a world that should evolve toward uniformity and transparency, but as the necessary ground for the construction of reason in a world meant to remain diverse and unpredictable.
