The European Network of Institutes for Advanced Study (NETIAS) met from 16 to 18 September 2025 at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) in Uppsala for two days of work and discussion dedicated to the shared challenges faced by European IASs: their role within the contemporary academic landscape, key development priorities, and opportunities for joint initiatives in the years to come.

In her opening address, Christina Garsten, Director of SCAS, emphasized the importance of the network as a vital fabric of solidarity and dialogue, positioned at the crossroads of unique identities and shared challenges, in a global context marked by growing attacks on science and researchers.

Members of the network presented the progress of several working groups, notably on the integration of early-career researchers into IAS ecosystems, the benefits of Arts and Science residencies, and strategies to diversify the profiles of resident fellows. Other groups are continuing their work on issues related to Scholars at Risk, interdisciplinarity, and access to European funding opportunities.

The Institute for Advanced Study in Nantes, represented by its Director Sophie Halart, shared its experience with Arts and Science initiatives through the Chair “Arts, Societies and Contemporary Mutations” and the project Towards an International of Rivers and Other Elements of Nature.

In addition, the Institute will co-coordinate this year, together with the Collegium Helveticum in Zurich, the working group dedicated to scholars at risk and academic freedom.

The network’s website is now online, providing a central platform for information on calls for applications, workshops, and ongoing initiatives, including the CAT (Constructive Advanced Thinking) call.
