The residency program of the FIAS consortium will resume at the Nantes Institute at the start of the 2026 academic year. From September 2026 onward, the FIAS - French Institutes for Advanced Study - residency program will return to the Nantes Institute for Advanced Study. Beginning in September 2026, the Institute will host four researchers for a ten-month residency, marking the dynamic relaunch of this international initiative dedicated to research in the humanities and social sciences.
FIAS: An International Program Anchored in the Landscape of Institutes for Advanced Study
The FIAS program offers high-level international researchers a setting conducive to scientific freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and dialogue with society. Supported by the European Union (Marie Skłodowska-Curie program), it provides a unique opportunity to conduct independent research while being part of a network of European institutes.
The program has currently been extended until 2030, ensuring its continuity and further development within the Nantes Institute. A new FIAS call for applications will be published on the Institute’s website by this summer for a residency beginning in September 2027, again for a duration of ten months.

A Relaunched Call for Applications and an Ongoing Selection Process
The FIAS call for applications was published at the beginning of summer 2025. The selection process is currently underway, involving an international scientific committee. The selected fellows will be announced at the beginning of 2026, ahead of their arrival in September.
This new edition of the FIAS program reflects real momentum: 765 applications were submitted across all institutes in the network.
The profiles of the applicants show both gender balance and an exciting disciplinary diversity, bringing together history, literature, philosophy, sociology, political science, gender studies, geography, art, and art history. This diversity is coupled with a truly international dimension: applications come from Europe, North America, Africa, Asia–Oceania, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, sketching a research landscape that is open and deeply global.
These figures—beyond their quantitative dimension—above all highlight how strongly the FIAS program continues to attract researchers with varied backgrounds, carrying multiple perspectives and fresh insights into the transformations shaping our world.
The Next Cohort
These four FIAS residents will form part of the Institute’s 2026–2027 cohort.
They will be joined by:
- an artist, selected as part of the Chair Arts, Societies and Contemporary Change (call for applications ongoing);
- a researcher, hosted within the framework of the Chair Living within planetary boundaries (call for applications ongoing).
Together, they will form the new intellectual community of the Institute for the 2026–2027 residency year. A public presentation of the new cohort will be organized in spring 2026. It will offer an opportunity to discover the profiles of the future residents as well as the projects they will develop within the Institute.
