Subject

The chair supports the development of artistic research in dialogue with the humanities and social sciences, with the aim of questioning the contemporary transformations of our societies.

By considering artistic practices as research, the residency contributes to the emergence of new territories of inquiry — practices and forms, working methods, regimes of production — that explore societal and environmental change through cross-disciplinary approaches.

It also raises methodological questions and reflections on the nature of the embodied knowledge produced and transmitted through these practices.

Candidate Profiles

This residency is intended for professional artists from the Global South with at least five years of professional experience, and who can demonstrate the dissemination and exhibition of their work (exhibitions, events, publications, participation in study days, workshops).

All nationals (by nationality and residence) of countries in the Southern Hemisphere are eligible, with the exception of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Guyana.

Activities

Throughout the life of the chair, and across the different residencies, the following activities are carried out:

The artist in residence pursues their research and benefits from the framework offered to all residents.

Outreach, mediation, and dissemination activities are organized for different audiences:

  • with the Institute’s residents, through a seminar;
  • with students of the Beaux-Arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire, through one or more workshops (a total of 12 days);
  • with the wider public, through a lecture or public event.

The production of a work is not the primary aim of this residency; however, the artist is granted a limited budget to carry out a project.

Host Institution

The Nantes IAS is housed in an exceptional building on the banks of the Loire, specifically designed to meet its needs.
