This lecture marks the beginning of the third residency of the Chair Living within Planetary Boundaries. For its third and final year, the Chair welcomes anthropologist Alix Levain and her research project, Conditions of Living and Conditions for Life: Popular Understandings and Appropriations of Planetary Boundaries in a Growing Metropolis. The lecture will offer an opportunity to discover her academic background, her research project, and the perspectives that will shape this final year of the Chair.

This research project draws on the citizens' grievance notebooks (cahiers de doléances) collected by Nantes Métropole in 2018–2019 to examine the relationships between living conditions, ecological awareness, and civic engagement. It seeks to understand how everyday experiences shape pathways towards ecological commitment, while testing an analytical framework for "popular ecologies" in a metropolitan context. In collaboration with the Chair's partners, the project will explore how people perceive planetary boundaries and the forms of political engagement that emerge from these perceptions, through the lens of public anthropology.
