"L’édification de la nation démocratique dans une société multiculturelle : Etude comparative"

"Je tiens à analyser dans un cadre comparatif une caractéristique essentielle de l’histoire des premières années après l’indépendance de l’Inde, présidée par Jawaharlal Nehru, à savoir : le processus complexe de l’émergence de la démocratie étroitement lié au processus de construction de la nation dans une société qui est profondément divisée au niveau de la langue, de la religion, des castes, etc., division grandement aggravée au cours de l’expérience coloniale. Je voudrais examiner comment un même attachement aux principes démocratiques apparaît dans d’autres sociétés, dont les contextes historiques sont différents, et est-ce que cet engagement jouera de la même façon un rôle dans l’édification de la nation. Je voudrais étudier les exemples de la France, de la Grande-Bretagne et des Etats-Unis ainsi que les anciennes colonies, en particulier celles avec une population multiculturelle, multireligieuse, multilingue ou multiraciale, comme l’Afrique du Sud, la Turquie et le Brésil. Quels sont les moments historiques, le cas échéant, qui mènent vers la remise en cause ou l’affaiblissement de ce principe ? Quelles sont les circonstances historiques qui conduisent à son affaiblissement, et quelles sont celles qui mènent à son renforcement. Cette exploration permettrait de délimiter des zones de risque ou d’espoir et permettrait d’agir comme une aide et un avertissement pour la démocratie en Inde."

Eléments biographiques : 

Professeur d’histoire moderne à l’Université Jawaharlal Nehru (JNU, New Delhi, Inde), Mridula Mukherjee a orienté son travail sur le rôle des paysans dans la révolution non violente. Elle analyse les défis auxquels l’Inde est aujourd’hui confrontée et les succès qu’elle a obtenus, à la lumière de son héritage colonial et de sa lutte centenaire pour la liberté. Entre temps, elle a dirigé, depuis 2006, le Nehru Memorial Museum. Elle est tout particulièrement chargée de la préservation et du développement de la bibliothèque sur l’histoire de l’Inde moderne. En 2008, elle a publié «l’Inde depuis l’indépendance» (Penguin).
