Franciscus Verellen

Presentation

An historian of medieval China, Franciscus Verellen was director (2004 to 2014) of the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient, where he holds the chair in History of Daoism and currently serves as head of the EFEO Hong Kong Center. A member of the French Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, he has taught at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Columbia and Princeton Universities, UC Berkeley and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A member and Edwin C. and Elisabeth A. Whitehead Fellow in the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton in 2009-2010, Verellen is an external reviewer for the School of Historical Studies. He has published widely on the history of religion and regional culture in China. Franciscus Verellen is chair of the European Consortium for Asian Field Study (ECAF), member of the Policy Council of Campus France and member of the EU Expert Advisory Group "Horizon 2020".
