Rencontre "Word and Image"

“Word and Image both signify meaning. They are two distinct expressions or cardinals of language and linguistic possibility. One could represent and speak intelligibly of a word in terms of other words or word. Image, in instructive contrast to word, cannot be represented or spoken of in terms of another image or images. Each image could be said to abide as a thing unto itself; complete and sovereign. Image, unlike word, does not dwell with other images. A word gathers meaning in its indwelling with other words. One can recognise clearly the integral link of shared identity between a word and its translations. For an image such clear recognition—of the word picture in singular reference to an image—simply cannot be. The telling irony is that an image speaks through words. Utterly unlike word, image transcends historical-cultural mediations. It is a sign with a universal human reach. Image can and does make meaning available even when it has been torn irretrievably apart from its locus and origin.”

Suresh Sharma, membre associé de l’IEA de Nantes, a étudié l’histoire et la civilisation chinoise, à l’Université de Delhi. Ancien professeur d’histoire et d’anthropologie, il a également été directeur du Centre pour l’étude des sociétés en développement à New Delhi. Dans le cadre de sa recherche sur « Word and Image », il a initié pendant son séjour à l’IEA de Nantes, un groupe de travail et une série de séminaires autour de cette notion. Deux premières rencontres ont eu lieu à Nantes et à Cracovie en 2012 et un séminaire s’est tenu en novembre dernier à Delhi. Plusieurs résidents y participaient, et l’IEA de Nantes soutiendra la publication d’un ouvrage retraçant les échanges. De nouveaux ateliers se tiendront en 2013 et 2014, à Nantes et à Tokyo.
