Hartmut Kaelble

Presentation

Born in 1940 in Göppingen (Germany) he studied at the University of Tübingen and at the Free University of Berlin in history, sociology and public law.
He did his thesis, led by Gerhard A. Ritter, on the topic of central interest groups of German industrialists, " Centralverband Deutscher Industrieller " 1890-1914.
He presented his thesis in Modern History with special consideration to the economic history titled "Entrepreneurs in Berlin at the beginning of industrialization," at the Free University of Berlin.
From 1971-1991 he was professor of economic and social history, Free University of Berlin, he became Professor of Social History at the Humboldt University of Berlin from 1991 to 2009. Since 2004 he is Chairman of the SFB 640 at Humboldt University of Berlin: "Changing representations of the social order. Intercultural and Inter-temporal Comparisons."

His research interests are: social mobility, social inequality, European identity, the social history of European integration and comparative social history of Europe

He was a researcher and teacher invited several times at the EHESS ,in the CIERA, the MSH, Paris, the Sorbonne (Paris I) (2001), Harvard University (1972-1973), the St.Antony’s College Oxford (1976), at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1982).
