The conditions of residency are subject to an individual agreement between the Nantes IAS and each selected Fellow before arrival in Nantes. The agreement includes the details of the material conditions of the stay (financial conditions, lodging, organization of the trip, administrative procedures, etc.). In this respect, the Nantes IAS sends a questionnaire to the selected candidates some six months before their arrival. All over the stay, the services of Nantes Institute for Advanced Studies will be at their disposal regarding any requested information.
Negotiations about the agreement are based on the following principles: for the Fellow, the year spent in Nantes should not create any disruption of life (principle of "no gain, no loss"). In case the Fellow belongs to a university, this institution is invited to contribute to the funding as long as it will also benefit from the results of the stay (either under the form of sabbatical leave, delegation, or under any other form to be negotiated with the Institute for Advanced Studies).
Financial conditions are discussed case by case as shown in the following examples:
Fellow having no professional income (post-doctoral; unpaid leave; free lance): the Nantes IAS offers a fellowship based on the salary earned by a French scholar of similar carreer seniority (The National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) wages scale serving as a reference).
Fellow keeping all or part of his/her income (sabbatical, retired): the Nantes IAS offers a fellowship that takes into account losses in earnings and extra-costs resulting from the stay.
French University scholar: if this Fellow is not on sabbatical leave, the Nantes IAS will negotiate with his/her University an agreement for the delegation of this scholar (same type of delegations as does the National Center of Scientific Research, CNRS: the scholar continues to receive his/her salary from his/her University while the Nantes IAS pays in return a yearly contribution). The Nantes IAS also serves a mobility allowance to cover extra-costs.
