"Standards and food crises in Africa from the great Sahelian famine of the 1910s to "hunger riots "of 2008"

Hunger tends to reappear at the beginning of this twenty-first century as a major problem at international level. In my research project, I intend to analyze this "problem" - and its perception as such - in its history, from the specific cases of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, since the great famine of the 1910s until the so called "hunger riots" in 2008.
I want to examine how, during this period, in Sahelian Africa we alternatively passed through food phases qualified as "normal" to phases qualified as "crisis". This process of balancing between "standard" and "crisis", far from depending only on food determinants, is part of a wider dynamic, also conditioned by the history of food policies, that of nutrition research and of social protest.

Biographical elements:

After numerous visits to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, Vincent Bonnecase supports his thesis in 2008 ( "Poverty in the Sahel. The construction of knowledge about living conditions in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger (1945 -- 1974), Thesis Paris 1) and then he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Center d’Etudes d’Afrique Noire (CEAN, University of Bordeaux IV) under the ANR "African causes".

Research themes:
- History of hunger in Sahelian Africa.
- The construction and standardization of knowledge on living standards.
- The food issue in Sahelian Africa.
