"Dealer-owners from Nantes and colonial brokers in the eighteenth century: business relations between Chaurand brothers and Gilbeau Gerbier Cape"

Abstract:
This is a research on the relationship between slave owners and brokers. Brokers’ houses located in the French islands of America were an essential link in the slave trade. The broker is the man of confidence of the owner , his attorney. We want to study the transactions involved with the arrival of a slave in Saint-Domingue from the example of the slave house Chaurand brothers of Nantes. The question is: how did Gilbeau Gerbier work with the settlers on the Cape? The study is first that of a French broker installed in Cape Town, its activities and its involvement in the colonial and metropolitan economies. It is also the study of creditors and debts, their recovery and the amount of profits.

Biographical elements:

His studies focus on the sugar trade in France in the 18th century and the slave trade at the same time. His research focuses also on the Atlantic trade, European expansion (15th-18th century), the economy and society of the French West Indies (17th-18th century) and contacts between blacks and whites on the coast of Guinea ( Trade and inter-personal contacts).
