Research Project:
"Money and normativity: Institution and Foundation"

My project for the academic year 2009-2010 is to continue and further radicalize my previous research on currency as an Institution. The first research results were published in two books : Le radici di una fede. Per una storia del rapporto fra moneta e credito in Occidente, Bruno Mondadori, Milan 2008, et Fine della finanza. Da dove viene la crisi e come si può pensare di uscirne (en collaboration avec L. Fantacci), Donzelli, Roma 2009. The first cycle should end with L’enigma della moneta, Et al., Milan 2010.
This research asked me years of work, during which I was extremely fortunate to receive the advice of my friends and colleagues Luigi Doria and Luca Fantacci. But it turns out that, far from offering a conclusion, it opens many ways to go in details. My research work at the IEA will attempt to advance on one of them from two questions.
The gradual failure, I mean in the present technical climate, of the very possibility of a legal conception of the Institution, requires to think deeply and already to reconsider the phenomenon of normativity as being a dogmatic space necessary to the implementation of the law for any human community. "What about normativity in a technical climate? "Will be my first question.
But precisely, the above indicated failure shows that the answer to this question might be: "Nothing!" Therefore the second question: "Where does this impossibility comes from ?"However, answering this question requires primarily a renewed reading of the "places" [topoi] where the traditional thought of the Institution has been elaborate. Hence a research method that will be foremost hermeneutical in the primary sense of the interpretation of texts. The starting point of my work is indeed the almost obvious idea that if the institution and its cybernetization are an enigma, the meaning of it is very clearly reflected in the texts: in the masterpieces of traditional thinking as well as in the multitude of documents currently produced by a techno-science now embracing the "sciences" so-called "legal", "economic", "social" and so on. So this means for me to read carefully the texts of the tradition so that the amendment of institutionality which governs the normative production of cybernetizised institutions becomes eloquent. The challenge is to read below the dispersion of discourses that characterizes ultramodern "Human" sciences, and firstly economics, a modality quite new to constitute a corpus capable of producing profound regulatory effects.

Biographical elements:

Massimo Amato teaches at Bocconi University in Milan. For Fifteen years he devotted his research to money: history of monetary systems, history of monetary thought, reform of the monetary system.

On this subject he wrote several articles and four essais:
