Research Project:
"The immortal body of nanomedicine"

Abstract:

The unequaled potential of nanotechnology applied to the biomedical field raises the question of changing from curative medicine to a medicine of improvement. Aiming to repair tissues or damaged cells by means of biocompatible nanomaterials, a major part of current research in nanomedicine falls directly within the wider field of regenerative medicine. The magnitude and scope of biomedical advances, announced in particular in the fight against aging, require that one questions the assumptions and social implications of these new forms of treatment and intervention.
Upstream of the process of dissemination of these medical innovations, this reflexion will identify the ethical and potential controversy raised by them before their integration into the health system. It will be based on an extensive corpus of theory that allow to analyze the development of nanomedicine and regenerative medicine in the broader context of demographic, economic, political and cultural changes which characterize our times.

Biographical elements:

The researches of Celine Lafontaine address the social, cultural and symbolic technosciences. Her thesis on cybernetic and informational paradigm has led to interest in the development of new information technologies and biotechnology. Her studies deal at the same time with epistemological, cultural, social and ethical issues. In addition to conducting a research program on the imagination of nanotechnology, she currently directs her work in the field of biomedical advances, specifically on social issues in regenerative medicine and nanomedicine.
